What is mentor coaching?
According to The International Coaching Federation (ICF):
Mentor Coaching for an ICF Credential consists of coaching and feedback in a collaborative, appreciative and dialogued process based on an observed or recorded coaching session to increase the coach’s capability in coaching, in alignment with the ICF Core Competencies.
To put it simply, mentor coaching allows you to practice your coaching skills under the guidance of an experienced coach who can provide constructive feedback. This feedback not only helps you pass the performance evaluation but also aids in improving your coaching skills, resulting in personal and professional growth. In essence, mentor coaching is an invaluable opportunity for coaches to develop their abilities.
How many hours of mentor coaching do I need?
Credentialing candidates on the ACC ACSTH and Portfolio paths must complete 10 hours of Mentor Coaching prior to submitting their application. They are required to partner with a Mentor Coach who holds a valid ACC*, PCC or MCC Credential.
What do I need to keep in mind when selecting a mentor coach?
First and foremost, it's crucial to find a mentor coach who is a good match for you in terms of personality and connection. You want someone who treats you as an equal partner, rather than someone who acts like they're better than you. This means they should be open, honest, and vulnerable in their interactions with you.
A good mentor coach should also encourage you to take the lead in identifying areas to work on between sessions that will lead to more powerful coaching. They should be supportive and genuine in celebrating your achievements and growth throughout the process. They should have confidence in their own coaching abilities and respect your unique coaching style.
It's important that your mentor coach also fosters the development of your own coaching style. They should hold both themselves and you accountable for performance and periodically assess the effectiveness of your relationship.
